In an industry built on raw power, Hiab has always reached for something more - the perfect harmony between machine and operator. In addition to being smart, our cranes’ intelligence is built from the ground up since every part of a Hiab crane is designed and manufactured in-house. This purpose-built technology ensures our machines are optimized specifically for the daily demands of the loader crane operator. In this article we are taking a closer look at what makes Hiab’s products exceptional.

What sets Hiab apart: the power of owning the entire process

What truly sets Hiab apart is that we don't just "assemble" cranes using parts from various suppliers. We manage the entire production chain from the initial design and engineering concepts to the sophisticated control systems and software, all the way to the ready-made crane.
This complete vertical integration provides a massive advantage for our customers. We purpose build every valve to fit the crane’s specific geometry and requirements. Our software developers and structural engineers work side-by-side to ensure the crane’s power and intelligence are in perfect sync. From the first valve casting in our precision foundry to the final system assembly, every detail is handled in-house to guarantee unmatched quality.

Olsbergs - where the magic happens

Thanks to Olsbergs, a Hiab company, the Hiab crane's control systems are engineered for one purpose only: optimal crane performance. All products are manufactured at Olsbergs’ own facilities in Eksjö and Vallentuna, Sweden, ensuring full control over quality and performance from raw material to the finished crane.
With over 40 years of continuous development, 30 patented innovations, and 20,000 systems installed worldwide, the Olsbergs advantage delivers seamless performance where specialized focus ensures movements are fluid and intuitive rather than jerky. These controls are fine-tuned for the exact fingertip sense an operator needs for high-stakes maneuvers, providing pinpoint precision. Furthermore, because every component from the valve systems to the control electronics is designed to work in perfect unison, the crane features built-in reliability that reduces system stress and downtime.

The Intelligence of SPACEevo control system technology

The SPACEevo platform, the overall control system for communication and safety, is developed by Hiab. The radio remote control system from Olsbergs is communicating with SPACEevo in real-time for seamless and safe operation of the crane. SPACEevo allows for real-time data processing from multiple sensors and ensures adaptive crane behavior with the lightning-fast processing power required for modern safety features and automated functions. The precision and power from the Olsbergs hydraulic valves, the precision in the levers of the CombiDrive 4 controller together with the intelligence of SPACEevo give the crane operator a powerful tool to safely and efficiently operate the crane in all kinds of situations.

Built for excellence

In the hands of a skilled professional, a crane is only as good as its responsiveness. With Hiab’s cranes there is a synergy between the operator’s talent and our purpose-built engineering. Because we design and manufacture the crane's 'brain' entirely in-house, we can fine-tune the system to react exactly how an expert expects. This alignment reduces mental fatigue and allows the operator’s skill to shine, ensuring every move is precise, safe, and efficient. This is the Hiab advantage.

In an industry built on raw power, Hiab has always reached for something more - the perfect harmony between machine and operator.

In the on-road load handling industry, a machine is only as valuable as its availability. For decades, the primary strategy for keeping fleets running has been strict, calendar-driven servicing. But as the industry moves faster and margins grow tighter, the traditional approach to equipment care is no longer enough.
At Hiab, we believe the future of safer, more sustainable lifecycle services relies on a fundamental industry shift: moving away from reactive and preventive schedules, and stepping fully into the era of predictive maintenance, powered by AI.

Understanding the shift: preventive vs. predictive maintenance

To understand where the industry is heading, we must clearly distinguish between how maintenance has historically been managed and how connected data is rewriting the rules.
Preventive maintenance relies on predefined intervals, such as replacing wear parts after a set number of operating hours or conducting structural inspections annually. While this interval-based approach is highly effective at minimizing emergency breakdowns, it operates without knowing the actual condition of the machine. It can lead to over-servicing, where perfectly functional components are replaced prematurely, yet it still leaves fleets vulnerable to sudden, unforeseen failures between scheduled visits.
Predictive maintenance, on the other hand, is condition-based. It utilizes real-time asset data, advanced sensors, and telemetry to continuously monitor the actual health of the equipment. Instead of servicing a machine on a fixed schedule, connected systems analyze sensor data, track fluctuations and anomalies, and monitor load cycles to anticipate component failure before it happens. Maintenance is scheduled based on fact-based insights, reducing the risk of unexpected downtime and unnecessary component waste.

Our vision: engineering maximum uptime

For predictive maintenance to become a reality, hardware, software, big data and human expertise must work together seamlessly.
Michael Bruninx, President of Services at Hiab, explains the strategic imperative: "Historically, the load handling industry has treated physical maintenance and connectivity as two completely separate investments. Our vision is to eliminate that divide. We are no longer just fixing equipment; we are utilizing connected data to actively engineer maximum uptime for our customers.”
This confidence is grounded in scale. Through a sustained investment over many years, Hiab has amassed data from more than 50,000 connected assets and over 1,000,000 completed service visits. Michael elaborates, “As the market leader in load handling equipment, we see this as more than an opportunity; it is our responsibility to set the industry standard. Our customers rely on us to support their productivity, enable safer operations, and reduce downtime.”

The path forward: collaboration is key

The true power of predictive maintenance is unlocked through deep collaboration with our customers and our authorized service partners globally.
When connected insights flag a predictive alert, the goal is to equip our local service teams and partners with exact diagnostic data before they even touch the machine. This transforms the entire workflow. Instead of reacting to an urgent phone call from a stranded driver, the service team can preemptively order the required parts, contact the fleet manager, and schedule a targeted repair during the truck’s planned idle time.
The transition from preventive schedules to predictive intelligence is an ongoing journey. As we continue to invest in connected solutions and integrated service models, we look forward to sharing more about the next evolution of our service offerings very soon.
Stay tuned as we build a smarter, more predictable future for load handling.

The on-road load handling industry is moving away from rigid calendar schedules and stepping into the era of AI-powered predictive maintenance. By analyzing data from over 50,000 connected assets, we anticipate component repairs before failure occurs, maximizing fleet uptime and efficiency.

The expansion and modernisation project of Hiab’s MULTILIFT production facility in Raisio, Finland, is progressing. A significant milestone was reached in August 2026, when the building's foundation stone was laid.
In spring 2025, Hiab announced a EUR 19 million investment for the expansion of the MULTILIFT demountables production facility in Raisio. The nearly 20,000-square-metre project will modernise 16,400 square metres of existing facilities and build approximately 2,900 square metres of new space. The renewal includes production and office facilities and a new showroom.
“The expansion of the Raisio production facility is an important strategic milestone for Hiab, strengthening our leadership position and supporting our long-term growth targets. At the same time, it is a significant step towards lower emissions in manufacturing, supporting our ambition to improve energy efficiency at our sites,” says Scott Phillips, President of Hiab.

Sustainable growth and energy efficiency

Operational excellence, employee wellbeing and energy efficiency are at the core of the investment. The facility will be moving away from district heating and increasing the use of energy recovered from Hiab’s own processes, complemented by solar power and battery storage solutions.
"This is an important investment that enhances operations and promotes emissions reduction. The project supports Hiab's long-term climate ambitions while creating a more energy-efficient and resilient manufacturing site," says Johanna Pirinen, Vice President Sustainability at Hiab.
The expansion enables an increase in the production of world-leading MULTILIFT demountables for both commercial and defence needs. At the same time, the upcoming modern production and office spaces support Hiab's 3E approach (Easiness, Empowerment, Excellence) and improve employee safety, comfort and satisfaction.

Production running even during construction

The modernisation is being carried out in phases. The factory remains in production use throughout the construction phase, and the work phases and scheduling have been carefully planned to minimise operational disruptions. In August 2026, the project reached an important milestone when the foundation stone of the new facility was laid. In the ceremony, a time capsule was placed inside the foundation stone, shedding light on the historical, present and future-looking aspects of the project.
"Once completed, the premises will have a positive impact on employee comfort and the improvement of energy efficiency, where we want to be a trendsetter. The project is also seen as increasing Hiab's attractiveness as an employer in Southwest Finland," notes Jussi Peltoniemi, Operations Director, Hiab Raisio.
The Raisio factory expansion is estimated to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2027.

The expansion and modernisation project of Hiab’s MULTILIFT production facility in Raisio, Finland, is progressing. A significant milestone was reached in August 2026, when the building's foundation stone was laid.

A white paper from Hiab reveals that noise is more than just an annoyance; it’s a sign of wasted energy. By redefining noise as "unwanted vibrations and sound," the industry is beginning to see that a quieter machine is a more efficient, safer and more productive one.

Noise originates from different sources

In final-mile delivery, common issues include frequent idling, the mechanical clatter of roll-up shutters, and the operation of tail lift pumps. In the waste and recycling sector, noise is typically generated by high-duty-cycle hydraulics and the spikes in engine RPM required to power them. Bin clutter and the sound of materials like glass or scrap being emptied also creates unwanted noise.
Regional logistics operations contribute through drivetrain and tyre noise, air brake systems, and the constant rattle of trailers. On the other hand, forestry and lumber segments may suffer from intense hydraulic forces and the loud impact of logs striking bunks or grapples. In construction, noise stems from idling engines, the whining of hydraulics under load, and the clanking of chains or heavy impacts when placing large loads.
Across all segments using load handling solutions, equipment operators are most often the ones that are exposed to noise the most. However, negative noise effects also reach site workers, local residents and the general public.

Many positives in shifting towards quieter operations

There are many positives in shifting towards quieter operations. Constant noise and vibration can create workplace risks that increase physical and psychological strain. Quieter conditions help operators stay focused and reduce long-term fatigue.
High noise levels can also drown out warnings and make site coordination difficult. Lower noise levels support better situational awareness and clearer dialogue between crews.
Lowered noise levels can also improve work productivity and precision. As loud noise reads wasted energy, lower machine sounds can often translate to better operator feedback and more precise load handling.
Less noise can also enhance access in urban areas. As logistics move closer to residential areas, meeting acoustic regulations is essential for environmental compliance and public acceptance. With 100 European cities set to become zero-emission and noise-sensitive zones, quiet electric equipment like the MOFFETT eSeries or MULTILIFT eUltima is the key to maintaining access to urban contracts.
High noise levels are not pleasing factors in any working environment; it can even drive the workforce away. In a competitive labour market facing structural driver shortages, providing a high-quality, low-stress working environment can be a central tool for recruitment and retention.

Real-world examples of how silent operations can make a difference

AMK Transport, a Swedish crane truck service, found that traditional diesel engines were a significant source of physical and mental exhaustion, particularly in dense urban environments where sound echoes between buildings. By field-testing a HIAB wspr e-PTO system, founder Kalle Björklund discovered that the reduction in noise allowed for normal conversation during lifts. It also provided a better sense of the surrounding activities. The factors improved site safety and situational awareness significantly.
AMK Transport also noted that the move to electric power enhanced precision. A quiet system allows operators to hear the hydraulic pump beginning to work before the crane starts to move. This provides an early acoustic feedback that allows for finer control during delicate operations.
AWD Lifts & Transport in Australia became a pioneer in its region by being the first company in Australia to adopt an all-electric MOFFETT eSeries for delivering building materials. Owner Greg Rogers was initially sceptical about whether the investment would be justified, but was quickly "blown away" by the machine’s responsiveness and its ability to handle off-road conditions even better than its diesel counterparts.
AWD Lifts & Transport has seen a tangible return on investment through reduced maintenance costs and lower mechanical wear. The electronically controlled motors prevent operators from over-revving (a common habit with diesel models) which has led to less mechanical stress and fewer damage incidents on busy construction sites.
Texas Åkeri & Entreprenad, a multi-generation Swedish family business, is standardising its fleet around fossil-free transport and electric hooklift systems like the MULTILIFT eUltima. For owner Lars-Erik "Texas" Andersson, the transition is about both driver satisfaction and commercial demand, as an increasing number of customers now include strict environmental and noise criteria in their procurement processes.
Texas Åkeri & Entreprenad has observed a dramatic shift in driver preference: the drivers operating the remaining biofuel trucks are already eager to switch to the "electric calm" of the new fleet.

Quiet is becoming the new standard

As urbanisation continues and sustainability regulations tighten, the "quiet revolution" is gaining momentum. Whether it’s through intelligent engine control or fully electric power, the goal is clear: load handling that is human-centric, highly controlled, and built for a better tomorrow.

In honor of this double recognition, we have donated our EUR 5,000 prize money to Blicki e.V. This donation supports their mission to educate children on road safety, particularly regarding heavy vehicles. We are proud to stand with the VAK and our industry peers in ensuring that as our trucks become more efficient, our streets also become safer for the next generation.

HIAB wspr+ and MULTILIFT L2 Driver Support have been recognised for their contribution to the future of the municipal and logistics industries.

Productivity has always been fundamental to success in load handling, but today, improving it is more essential than ever. In a world facing simultaneous challenges, from economic uncertainty and labor shortages to urban density and digital disruption, boosting productivity is the key to sharpening your competitive edge and improving profitability.
At Hiab, we believe true productivity is about finding smarter ways to use time, energy, equipment, and skills by looking at the full picture. Productivity answers the question: How can we accomplish more with what we already have?
The Hiab integrated solution
Hiab’s mission is to unlock the full potential of load handling in our customers’ businesses. We combine high-performance equipment, intelligent features, digital services, and operator training into one integrated system. In other words - we help our customers accomplish higher productivity. How do we do that?
The answer to this question is a combination of offerings:

Our smart equipment: Advanced models like the HIAB eX.HIPRO offer up to 30% energy efficiency gains compared to previous models, and are prepared for features like Semi-Automatic Motion (SAM) and Crane Tip Control (CTC).

Insights for data-driven decisions: HiConnect, our telematics data solution, provides near real time data from Hiab equipment to help optimise operator, equipment and fleet performance.

Maximized uptime: ProCare, our comprehensive service solution, helps ensure equipment performance, reliability and lifespan.

Redefined operator training: HiSkill is our SaaS platform for virtual crane-operator training. With a lightweight, portable simulator kit, HiSkill makes it easy to run training sessions anytime, anywhere while keeping trucks in service.

Conclusion: productivity is not optional

If you only take away one insight, let it be this: Productivity is no longer optional. It is the difference between growth and stagnation. The most valuable thing Hiab offers isn’t just cranes - it is the knowledge and dedication of our people, helping you find the perfect match between equipment and need.
