HIAB cranes installed on the iconic London Eye as part of landmark upgrade project

The installation was carried out over a five-day period in mid-March 2026, with all work completed during overnight operations while the London Eye remained fully operational. The project marks a significant milestone in the ongoing maintenance and future-proofing of the 135-metre observation wheel, which has welcomed millions of visitors since opening in 2000. The newly installed cranes replace the original HIAB units that had been in service since the attraction first opened, seamlessly modernising the London Eye’s operational and maintenance capabilities.
Positioned on the north side of the wheel, with one crane located waterside and the other landside, the new units are mounted on bespoke pedestals on either side of the structure. Their installation improves reliability, reduces maintenance downtime, and aligns with current safety and performance standards, ensuring continued efficient operation while minimising operational risk in a uniquely challenging environment.
Versatile support for demanding maintenance
The new HIAB cranes will support critical engineering activities across the structure, including lifting and positioning heavy components, assisting with capsule maintenance, supporting work on mechanical and electrical systems, and enabling the safe handling of equipment in constrained or elevated areas. With much of the work taking place at height, the cranes are purpose-built for the wheel’s unique geometry, offering a necessary alternative where traditional scaffolding or access methods cannot reach. In addition to day-to-day operations, the cranes also play a key role in the annual New Year’s celebrations, enabling the installation of around 2,000 fireworks rigged directly onto the structure.
The cranes are HIAB eX.232 HIPRO E-5 models, each fitted with personnel baskets and configured to meet the latest EN 280 safety standards for mobile elevating work platforms (MEWP). They are equipped with HIAB’s SPACEevo control system, which continuously monitors inputs from onboard sensors to ensure safe, precise operation, alongside advanced electro-hydraulic systems and an Olsbergs V200 valve for smooth, responsive performance. Each crane also features a 2-tonne hoist, further enhancing its versatility. An integrated interlock system ensures the wheel cannot rotate unless the cranes are safely stowed.
Precision control
Operating them is equally refined. Using HIAB’s CombiDrive 4 remote control, operators can work directly from the personnel basket, maintaining full control in what is an unusual working environment.
The cranes will also be supported by a HIAB ProCare maintenance package, ensuring long-term reliability and performance.
Commenting on the project, John Abbott, Sales Executive at Hiab, said, "The HIAB eX.232 HIPRO E-5 was selected for this project as it can be supplied in MEWP configuration with an electro-hydraulic power pack offering secondary back up systems, even in the event of a power failure. This is all possible due to the powerful combination of available hardware and software. The crane is a fully certified solution supporting safe and efficient lifting operations. With an intuitive control system, advanced sensor technology and smart features for optimised manoeuvres, it provides smooth, coordinated movement, making it an ideal solution for the London Eye and giving engineers a reliable and intuitive system to carry out their work with confidence."
Paul Dalton, Head of Technical Services at The London Eye, added, "Maintaining a structure as complex and iconic as the London Eye presents unique challenges. HIAB was selected for its strong reputation for reliability, precision engineering and advanced safety features. The cranes provide the flexibility and control required in such a high-profile environment, giving our engineers access to every part of the wheel. Combined with Hiab’s support network and proven track record, this made them the ideal partner for this upgrade, ensuring we can continue to deliver a world-class experience for our visitors."
Following nearly 12 months of planning, the project was delivered in partnership with Nick Sampson Mechanical Engineering Services, one of Hiab’s Authorised Service Centres.
This upgrade ensures that the London Eye continues to deliver a seamless experience for its approximately 3.5 million annual visitors. With 360 degree panoramic views stretching across landmarks such as the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace, maintaining the structure to the highest standards remains essential.
